A 59-year old woman suffering from knee pain for 9 years started walking again after an operation of about 1 hour.

9 years of knee pain of Rüjdiye İdem, mother of 5 children and living in Van, caused gait disturbance in the last years. The woman, who could not pray, had to rest after some walking and who could not bend down, was not able to meet her daily basic needs.  Rüjdiye İdem tried all treatment methods such as stem cell therapy and physical therapy except surgery, eventually decided to have an operation.

Rüjdiye İdem came to Konya from Van and was examined by Op. Dr. Murat Türkütanıt, Medova Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist. She also had Type 2 Diabetis, high blood pressure and cholesterol, herniated disc and spinal stenosis and it was decided that a surgery of “Total Knee Arthroplasty” would be performed. The surgery lasted for about 1 hour and the knee was covered with special pieces and an artificial joint designed for painless joint movements was formed. The patient started to walk the day after the operation and she was discharged on the 3rd day.

Rüjdiye İdem said that her pain ended, and she could walk easily. She continued, “I was not able to walk for 9 years. After walking for a short while, I had to sit and rest. I could not do anything in my house. Many treatment methods such as the stem cell were tried and no cure was found. I also had physical therapy. I had a lot of pain and could not walk at all. Now I do not have that pain as before the surgery and I can walk much more easily.”

Op. Dr. Murat Türkütanıt stated that the patient, who had come limping, was walking without problems after the surgery. He gave information on the surgery, saying, “The patient came limping to us. She had many problems before the surgery. As a treatment, we performed “Total Knee Arthroplasty” operation. We are discharging her on the 3rd day after the operation. She is much better and walks more easily. Each day she will become better. She can walk without a walking stick. For 9 years she has had serious pain.”

“Surgery should not be feared”

Op. Dr. Murat Türkütanıt gave advices for such patients and said, “They should not delay applying to orthopedics as many operations with very good results have developed. We get very good results regarding knee operations and the patient can walk in one day. The patients always have the fear and say, “Can I not walk after the operation?” There is no such thing. Our patients stand up and walk the day after the surgery. The life of the material we use at the operations is now 25-30 years. Previously, it was debated that these pieces would be no use in 10 years. We have overcome this issue and the issue of not being able to walk after the surgery. Our patient stands up and walks after the operation and is discharged in 2 – 3 days. These treatments are very good now. They should not be afraid in any case.”
